Goal Setting Tip – Creating A Compelling Vision Of Your Life

Here’s a tip for you when you begin your goal setting journey and creating your vision. Remember that your vision is not your mission statement. It is not your reason for existence, and it is not your life purpose.

Your vision is a visual representation of how you see your future self. It is a future desirable description of your life. Brian Tracy once said in one of his seminars, “Those who don’t plan out their future don’t get to have one.” Creating a vision is the first step in planning your desirable future.

When you sit down and think about your future desirable vision, use the following three points as your guidelines in describing it:

  1. Use Powerful Language

When you describe your future desirable state, use language that encompasses vivid imagery, elicits vibrant energy, and creates a feeling of desirability. You don’t want to just describe this state, you want to be drawn to it.

  2. Write Your Vision In The Present Tense

When you create your vision, write it as if it were happening now. In our programs, we use the following analogy: Imagine yourself in an elevator waiting for the car to stop and the doors to open. When they finally open, you find yourself looking at your new desirable world. Step into this new world and describe what you see, hear, smell, taste, and feel. Use as much detail as possible and be as thorough as possible. Remember, this is your vision. Be fully present in it as you describe it.

  3. Use Positive Imagery

In the email series on speaking mastery, we pointed out the dangers of using “not” and why we refrain from having our participants focus on what they “don’t want” when closing a presentation. This is especially true when you are in a goal setting session [see my post here] or creating your vision. Always describe what you want because you get what you pay attention to.

If you’ve never created a future vision for your life, now is a good time to start. Take this opportunity to describe in detail how you see your world in December 2017. Then, visit our Facebook page and let us know how you plan to take control of your life and your future.
